94 Points from James Suckling!

A delightful nose of blueberries, herbs, dark cherries, wild herbs and hints of earth. It’s medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Frank and transparent with fresh, crunchy blue fruit at the center. Lively and precise, with a laser-focused finish.

Tasting Notes: The nose has a distinct currant quality with a hint of capsicum framing cedar and brambly fruit. On the palate there is plum, more currant toasted seeds followed by powdered cocoa on the finish. This vintage is somewhat reminiscent of our 2011 bottling that has proven to be our most age worthy Gemellaia. We believe this wine will also reward patience in the cellar

Gemellaia: The history of growing Bordeaux varieties in Italy goes back for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 1970’s that anyone noticed internationally. The story of how Super-Tuscans evolved is that of legend, with entire books devoted to the subject. These Tuscan wines typically highlight a Bordeaux variety all by itself or blended with Sangiovese. Gemellaia is a barrel selection from our finest lots in the winery. Super-Tuscan inspired, it melds Sangiovese’s acid and tannin structure with the soft, generous fruit of Merlot from two special vineyards.

Giornata Wines...Inspired by Italy - Crafted in California

Giornata makes authentic, complex and balanced wines in Paso Robles, CA featuring Italian grape varieties. The journey in creating Giornata started with a dream to create wines from Italian grapes grown in California employing the sensibility and philosophy of Italian winemaking. Giornata works with the same grape vines (clonal material) as the best producers in Italy. The Central Coast of California possesses many of the attributes of the top wine growing regions of Italy. Giornata's winemaking style leans more Italian than Californian in that they favor wines with balance and subtlety rather than intensity and extraction. They pick their grapes at lower sugar levels and handle their must gently in the cellar, thus resulting in wines that belong on the Italian dinner table possessing both ample acidity and tannin. Traveling to Italy on a regular basis, Giornata continues to receive feedback on their efforts while researching Italian winemaking and viticultural methods.
