94 Points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate!

The 2021 Sangiovese has a deep core of red cherry and plum with accents of leather, savory herbs, mushroom and mossy bark. The full-bodied palate is bursting with juicy fruit. It has a finely chalky texture, shimmery acidity that highlights complex bitters and earth layers, and a long, ultra-spicy finish. 200 cases were made.

92 Points from Wine Enthusiast!

Ripe, extracted cherry aromas meet with nutmeg, caramel and chaparral on the nose of this bottling. There is great tension to the palate, framing the bright cherry, white pepper and leather flavors.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of dark cherry, graphite, and dried Italian herbs. On the palate, cherries, bay leaf, and herb-crusted seared meat.

Winemaker Notes: This bottling of 100% organically-farmed Brunello clones of Sangiovese comes from the beloved Luna Matta Vineyard. This vineyard has been CCOF since 2010 is predominately dry-farmed, sitting at an elevation of 1750 feet above sea level on beds of clay loam over calcareous substrate. The grapes see cool fermentation and foot-stomping facilitates the gentle extraction of color and tannin from these small-berried Sangiovese clones. The wine then ages for 18 months in Gamba French-oak barrels, 25% of which were new.

Sangiovese: At Giornata, there are at least three wines every vintage that are Sangiovese dominated, though only one of them is 100%. The varietal wine is crafted to be powerful and complex, yet balanced. Foot-stomping and extended maceration facilitate the gentle extraction of color and tannin from the small-berried Sangiovese clones that comprise this lot. A 22-month aging in neutral French oak barrels and puncheons allows further subtleties and nuances to emerge.

Giornata Wines...Inspired by Italy - Crafted in California

Giornata makes authentic, complex and balanced wines in Paso Robles, CA featuring Italian grape varieties. The journey in creating Giornata started with a dream to create wines from Italian grapes grown in California employing the sensibility and philosophy of Italian winemaking. Giornata works with the same grape vines (clonal material) as the best producers in Italy. The Central Coast of California possesses many of the attributes of the top wine growing regions of Italy. Giornata's winemaking style leans more Italian than Californian in that they favor wines with balance and subtlety rather than intensity and extraction. They pick their grapes at lower sugar levels and handle their must gently in the cellar, thus resulting in wines that belong on the Italian dinner table possessing both ample acidity and tannin. Traveling to Italy on a regular basis, Giornata continues to receive feedback on their efforts while researching Italian winemaking and viticultural methods.
